【明報專訊】Liu Xiaobo graduated from university in 1977. He taught at Beijing Normal University after he had earned a doctorate. In the 1980s, he began publishing articles that the Chinese government found to be quite irritating. He was often invited to American and European universities as a visiting scholar.
In 1989, he took part in the Tiananmen protests. He was therefore labelled a dissident (異見人士). He was among the chief drafters of Charter 08 (《零八憲章》), which was published on 10 December 2008, the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is about the human rights situation of China. Its publication not a little enraged the Chinese government.
In 2009, Liu was sentenced to eleven years in prison and was deprived of his political rights for two years for "inciting subversion of state power". He is now behind bars.
