【明報專訊】Warren Buffett and Bill Gates announced last June they would ask hundreds of American billionaires to be morally committed to give away at least 50% of their wealth to charity during their lifetime or after their death. The two have named the campaign The Giving Pledge. They asked those billionaires to state publicly their intention.
In a letter posted on the campaign's website, Buffett says he "couldn't be happier" with his 2006 decision to donate 99% of his wealth to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and his family charities. According to Reuters, since it began to operate in 1994, the foundation has given away more than US$22 billion for improving healthcare services in poor countries and helping Americans to succeed in school and life. Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates have so far donated more than US$28 billion to their foundation.
