【明報專訊】"I have only exercised the right to free speech, to which I am entitled under the constitution. I have done nothing unlawful. Though charges have been laid against me, I will utter no words of complaint," said Liu Xiaobo (劉曉波), this year's Nobel Peace Prize (諾貝爾和平獎) winner, on 23 December 2009.
Impact of the incident
The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize has gone to Liu Xiaobo "for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China". According to its announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee was impressed by Liu, who had been "a strong spokesman for the application of fundamental human rights in China" for over two decades. Some say the Chinese government has tried to pressure the committee not to do so. Critics are worried that Sino-Norwegian relations may suffer.
