【明報專訊】Taiwan's Cycling Festival lasted from October 16 to October 24 in Taitung (台東). The festival consisted of an elites road race, a self-challenge race, an Iron Man triathlon race and a Taiwan Cup Professional Race. It drew nineteen teams of cycling-lovers from ten countries including Rabobank, who finished third at Tour de France.
The event was organised by the Tourism Bureau, an agency under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC). It was expected to attract up to 30,000 visitors and generate over NT$140 million in tourism revenue.
Taiwan has been an active advocate (提倡者) of Ecolife. Bicycles have long been regarded as green transport. The authorities have worked hard to raise public awareness of climate change. They have introduced a climate adaptation calendar (氣候調適國民曆), in which weather forecast is combined with the lunar calendar. It provides the public with instant weather reports, traditional Chinese solar terms (節氣) and energy-saving tips.
