【明報專訊】“About myself
I am Pedro Bica Gomes from Brazil. I come from a city called Rio Grande, the southern state of Brazil. I'm an extrovert (個性外向的人) and like to meet new people and learn as much as I can from them. ”
Brazil is the biggest country in Latin America. We are famous for our landscapes, music, soccer, ecosystem and unique mix of cheerful and optimistic people. Brazil is also known for its hot and tropical weather, but not at where I live. My city is located in the southernmost part of the country, and we have the most well-defined seasons. Our summer is hot and winter freezing cold. It is surrounded by water and it has the biggest beach in the world. You can even find small fishing villages right across the road from big urban areas.
Brazilians take family seriously, and my family is no exception. We always get together, either to eat, to party or to travel, and we invite family friends along. We value everyone's opinion when making decisions, and we have great trust in each other. Interestingly, Hong Kong people also value family as much as we do! My host family always takes me to family gatherings, and truly cares about me. We talk a lot and exchange views on things. The people here in Hong Kong too treat their family with trust and respect.
School has to be one of the most different things from home. I studied at a high school in Brazil, and we were given a large degree of freedom in what we wanted to do, and how we managed our time. We didn't have that many school clubs, so we would spend our free time playing soccer. Imagine my surprise when I knew the amount of time Hong Kong students spend at school! That said, I have been enjoying my time here so far. I'm studying at SKH Tsang Shiu Tim Secondary School, and I really appreciate the way my teachers and classmates show their care. You can tell they are truly curious about my culture. I'm just loving my time here!
I've decided to join AFS a long time ago, and Hong Kong has always been my first choice. I've always thought Chinese culture is fascinating and very different from what I'm used to, and I wanted to try something very different. That said, there are actually more similarities between us than you would believe. For example, we both eat a lot of rice, we both love soccer, and we both value family very much. Now I am looking forward to Chinese New Year and its festive food!
