【明報專訊】The World Meteorological Organisation (世界氣象組織, WMO) came into being in 1950. It became a specialised agency of the United Nations in 1951. It is the UN system's authoritative voice on the state and behaviour of the Earth's atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, its climates and the resulting distribution of water resources. As of 4 December 2009, the WMO had 189 member states and territories which include China and Hong Kong. The WMO's predecessor (前身) was the International Meteorological Organisation (IMO), which was founded in 1873.
The WMO provides information on:
•world weather
•tropical cyclones and severe weather
•water-related hazards
•meteoalarm (Europe)
•safety at sea
